![]() ![]() You’re going to take a lot of damage, so a handyman shoring up the ship will be key to survival – and getting a treat for your trouble is the dopamine hit you need to keep spirits up as the Stormstrider disintegrates around you. The cartoonish character lineup is simply adorable, and all sport unique perks, with Finley’s random-reward-on-repair being my personal favourite. There’s only so much prep you can do with the random nature of drops, and you can quickly become overwhelmed by waves of enemies, so encounters are frantic, relying on your crew’s coordinated efforts to get through. Leaving them on deck isn’t an option as anything not placed in a slot will fly overboard once you leave the area. The ship has a limited number of designated slots for totems and ammo canisters, as well as planks to fit your ship, leading to plenty of hand-wringing over what to sacrifice and what to keep. Some of these interactions even present you with the opportunity to walk away with special items, like a cursed ship totem that will pay off big time if you beat the level boss while you have it equipped. Most tiles you land on prompt an aquatic battle, but there are brief reprieves from combat on certain map tiles that deliver you to one of a range of vendors where you can pick up resources. So identifying what’s on offer and charting a course accordingly is key. You’ll get to make a few moves before the area boss begins its intermittent crawl from the opposite side of the map, rousing into action after every three moves you make. Levels are split across three main maps, made up of a hexagonal grid of tiles. No explanation is given for the map icons – to add to the feeling of being a complete buffoon – but you’ll eventually figure out that they denote the type of interaction that awaits on each tile. ![]() As more vendors appear, you can fritter your hard-earned trinkets away on ships, weapons, and other upgrades. ![]() You’ll collect a few different types of resources like Tendrils and Sand Dollars that you can spend on upgrades, and you’ll retain some of these after unsuccessful runs that see you washed up on the Great Lighthouse’s beach once again. There are three main areas to conquer, alongside the boss that resides in each and a host of enemies in between. Operating from the island of the Great Lighthouse – which becomes slightly more populated as you unlock vendors and additional characters later on – you set sail in The Stormstrider on your impossible adventure to stave off The Darkness. Starting off on a storm-ravaged island, you quickly find out that the Aquapocalypse is here and it’s up to you and your fellow urchins to hold it off. Unless, of course, you and your crew of up to four players work together to survive the three ocean maps and defeat the final boss. And that, in a nutshell, is what will transpire in this co-op roguelite. It was re-examined by Jo Robertson and updated 8 months ago.Ship of Fools is named for Plato’s allegory of a ship of… well, fools, frankly, who can’t get their crap together to successfully navigate the vessel without it devolving into a mess.Īll profess to know what they’re doing, butting heads over leadership of the crew, and it inevitably falls to pieces. Our examiner, Andy Robertson, first checked Ship of Fools 13 months ago. It's fun and taxing at the same time, so that each run feels both rewarding and challenging. The result is a frantic nautical challenge for both solo or co-op sailing. As the weather and seas change each run, you need to adjust your course to find the right route to discover what lurks inside the storm. Teamwork is essential as you battle together to defend and repair the ship, combine item effects in powerful combos and make sure you have your shipmate's back. But there's a big focus on co-operative play as you need to both deal with combat as well as ship maintenance. You start by choosing which character to use and how to combine their different abilities with items and equipment. As you go you collect trinkets and artefacts to help you survive on this run and the next. You must defend yourselves from the increasingly aggressive enemies. Your mission is to man the cannons and battle sea monsters through the tempestuous seas of the Archipelago. You play be making multiple attempts to cross the sea, using cannons to defend yourselves Ship of Fools (2022) is a seafaring cooperative adventure where you set sail in dangerous seas and fight to survive. ![]()
